European Commission publishes targeted consultation on Mobile Satellite Services in EU 2 GHz MSS frequency band
The European Commission has launched a targeted consultation to gather feedback on the future use of the 2 GHz Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) frequency band. This initiative seeks to assess market demand, understand stakeholder perspectives, and guide policy decisions that strike the right balance between innovation, competition, and service continuity.
The input collected will help the Commission determine whether to renew existing licences, in full or in part, or to open a new selection procedure for access to the band after May 2027.
In Malta, the Malta Communications Authority (MCA) is the national regulatory authority responsible for managing and assigning spectrum for electronic communications services, including satellite services. The MCA actively engages in European regulatory discussions and contributes to the development of spectrum policy that ensures the efficient and equitable use of this scarce resource.
By working closely with industry stakeholders and maintaining alignment with EU-level decisions, the MCA helps shape policies that support connectivity, innovation, and sustainable competition across both terrestrial and satellite communications sectors.
The targeted consultation is open until 30th June 2025.
Further information on this targeted consultation can be found here, and stakeholders are invited to submit feedback here.
