A National Internet Exchange for Malta - Consultative Document

The MCA has published a consultative document on a National Internet Exchange.

The Telecommunications (Regulation) Act (Cap. 399) through Legal Notice 263 of 2000, Malta Internet Exchange Regulations stipulates the responsibilities of the ISPs, the Telecommunications Transport Providers (TTPs) and the Exchange with respect to the operation of the Malta Internet Exchange (MIX).

"The implementation of a central Internet exchange point is expected to be greatly beneficial since it would provide cost reductions, network efficiencies, improved subscriber access to local resources, enhanced subscriber usage experience and an ability to monitor ISP availability," stated Ing. Colin Camilleri, the MCA's Chief Technical Officer, "Although some form of local Internet traffic exchange is already present, it is felt that its current format is of limited scope, especially in a post-liberalisation scenario, when the possibility of multiple sources of international bandwidth could arise."
